Litecoin was the first altcoin, an alternative cryptocurrency to bitcoin. Its proof of work system was created to avoid mining with GPUs and FPGAs, but people still quickly managed to mine with GPUs. However, thus far no FPGA or ASIC mining has been developed. There will be a maximum of 84M LTC in circulation.
